The route

The Siddhartha Highway leaves Pokhara heading south through Syangja District, passing market towns such as Putalibazar and Waling. The road follows ridges and valleys, then drops to cross the Kali Gandaki before climbing again into Palpa.

Tansen sits on the hillside at around 1,350 m, the last sizeable hill town before the highway descends to Butwal and the plains. The air is usually a little warmer than in Pokhara by the time you arrive, and the views open out over terraced slopes and distant ridges.

Ways to travel

Most travellers choose between a private car with a driver, a bus, or a shared jeep or microbus. A private car lets you pick your start time and stop for tea or photographs along the way. Buses cost less and run the route regularly, but they stop often and can be crowded.

Ask your accommodation in Pokhara to help you compare the current options. Agree the route, the drop-off point and the price before you set off if you hire a car.

Tips for the road

Start in the morning so you have time in hand for delays. Roadworks are common on this highway, and during the monsoon, landslides can close sections for hours. Travel times here are a guide only, so check conditions locally on the day.

If you are prone to motion sickness, sit near the front and keep some water and a light snack with you. Roadside tea stops are easy to find, and a short break makes the bends easier.

Arriving in Tansen

Bulbul Farm Retreat is in Bartung, on the Bartung–Tansen Road, so ask the hosts for directions before you leave Pokhara and let them know roughly when to expect you. Once you have settled in, our Tansen and Palpa guide has ideas for your first walk into town. If you are carrying on to the Terai, see Tansen to Lumbini.
