What the weather is like

It does not usually rain all day, every day. Many days mix sunny or cloudy spells with heavy showers, often later in the day or overnight, with some longer wet spells. Humidity is high, especially on the plains. Clouds tend to cover the high peaks, though you may get a clear morning now and then.

Altitude makes a real difference. The Terai, including Lumbini and Chitwan, is hot and humid. Tansen sits at around 1,350 m, so it is usually milder, with cooler evenings. The hills are at their greenest, and the season is busy in the fields, as this is when rice is planted.

Roads and flights

Landslides are the main challenge. Heavy rain can bring down earth and rock onto hill roads, including stretches of the Siddhartha Highway, and clearing them can take hours or longer. Domestic flights may also be delayed by cloud.

Build a spare day into your itinerary, especially before an international flight, and avoid planning long road journeys back to back. Check road conditions the day before you travel, and see our guide to road travel for more tips.

What to pack

Bring a light waterproof jacket or umbrella, quick-drying clothes, sandals or shoes that cope with mud, and dry bags or zip pouches for your phone and documents. Insect repellent is useful, and if you plan forest walks, ask locally about leeches, which are common in damp woodland at this time of year.

A good season for staying put

The monsoon rewards fewer moves and longer stays. At Bulbul Farm Retreat, it is a time of full gardens and green views, and the garden pavilion is a pleasant place to sit and watch a shower pass. Ask the hosts how recent weather has affected the roads before you set off, and see the best time to visit Nepal to compare seasons.
