Getting there

The Siddhartha Highway climbs north from Butwal through a long series of bends to Tansen, at around 1,350 metres. From Bhairahawa, add the drive to Butwal first and allow roughly two to three hours in all. Times depend on traffic, roadworks and the weather, and the hill section is slower in the monsoon.

Bulbul Farm Retreat is in Bartung, on the Bartung–Tansen Road, with parking if you are driving. Agree your arrival time with the hosts and ask them for final directions. For more on the city at the foot of the hills, see our Butwal travel guide.

Why go up the hill

The main draw is the change in air. When the Terai is hot and humid, Tansen is usually noticeably cooler, and in winter the hills can be bright while fog settles over the plains. A night away from traffic and city noise, with a garden, home-cooked food and perhaps an evening bonfire, is often enough to reset.

A simple weekend plan

Set off the afternoon before your day off, so you arrive with daylight to spare. Spend the first evening in the garden, in a hammock or on the swing, and stay outside as the sky darkens over the hills. The next morning, walk Tansen's old bazaar, climb Shreenagar Hill, or simply linger over breakfast before the drive home. One night is enough for a change of air; two let you slow right down.

If a public holiday gives you an extra day, think about a longer outing, such as Rani Mahal on the Kali Gandaki. Our Tansen, Palpa guide has more ideas.

Booking a short stay

Weekends and festival periods such as Dashain and Tihar can be busy, so send your enquiry early. Mention how many of you are coming, which meals you would like and whether anyone would rather camp. The hosts confirm availability, the price and the terms before your stay is booked.
